What do Human Resource (HR) Managers do?

  • Create and implement plans, strategies and procedures relating to human resources (the workforce)

How to become a Human Resources Manager in Australia

A formal qualification is usually required to work as an HR Manager and there’ll be ongoing training and professional development to consider too.

Step 1 – Complete Year 12 and get your ATAR, you’ll need do well in English as it’s a prerequisite for most degrees. Other subjects that could be useful include Maths, Psychology and Business.

Step 2 – Try and get some relevant work experience, it could help you with uni and job applications, you’ll also learn more about the role and find out if it’s a career you’d like to pursue.

Step 3 – Find and complete a course that will provide you with the qualifications you’ll need in order to apply for HR positions. There are a few options to consider, for example:

Diploma of Human Resources Management at TAFE

Bachelor of Business (Human Resource Management) at QUT

Or complete an unrelated qualification and then get a Graduate Certificate in Human Resource Management or a Master of Human Resource Management.

You could take an administrative position within an HR department, then complete a Certificate IV in Human Resources which could allow you to apply for promotions, or count towards credits for a higher qualification (as above) to advance your career.

Note: Most courses will be available to do online, and you may be able to complete them full or part time.


Step 4 – Once you’ve been employed in an HR position, you’ll need to be committed to continuous learning and personal development:
